Pure: A Musical Reflection on Freedom, Childhood, and Returning to Simplicity
Retirement brings with it something unexpected: space. Space to reflect, to remember, and to reconnect with parts of life that once felt distant. My newest musical project, Pure, is inspired by this moment of reflection.
The concept behind Pure comes from comparing two very different but surprisingly connected stages of life: early childhood and retirement. Before preschool, life exists in a unique state of openness. Time feels expansive, curiosity is constant, and the world is experienced without the pressures and expectations that later define adulthood. It is a period of innocence—when exploration, imagination, and presence define daily life.
Between those early years and the present lies the long arc of responsibility: education, careers, obligations, and the many demands that shape adult life. These decades are meaningful and necessary, yet they often distance us from the simple sense of freedom that once came naturally.
Now, in retirement, something interesting happens. The structure of daily life loosens again. Time opens up. There is once more the opportunity to explore ideas, creativity, and curiosity without the constant pull of obligation. While retirement is not a return to childhood, it carries echoes of that earlier freedom—an opportunity to rediscover a quieter, more reflective state of being.
Pure is my attempt to capture that connection through music. The album will explore themes of stillness, openness, and rediscovered wonder. The compositions will reflect both memory and presence: the clarity of childhood experience and the reflective calm that can arrive later in life.
Musically, the project will focus on spacious textures and evolving soundscapes that invite the listener to slow down and reflect. Rather than telling a literal story, the pieces will evoke moods and emotional landscapes that mirror this idea of returning to something simple and essential.
In many ways, Pure is about recognizing that life can move in cycles. The freedom we experience as children disappears for a time, only to quietly return in new form later in life. This album is a meditation on that journey—and on the rare moments when time seems to open again, allowing us to reconnect with a sense of innocence, curiosity, and possibility.
I look forward to sharing more as the project develops.
